Today is my 53rd birthday. It's on family occasions like this that I miss my parents the most...
When you're older, birthdays are more a time for reflection on one's life rather than a cause for celebration; at least that's what they've become for me. In looking back, though, I'm not really very satisfied with the life I've led. I've had far more failures than successes, and hardly any of the wishes I had as a youngster have come true.
With one notable exception – when I was younger, I wished that the world would just leave me alone. And what do you know – by and large, the world has left me alone. Literally alone.
So one result was that yesterday, I had no one to share my birthday with. No getting together with friends, no one singing "Happy Birthday To You," certainly no presents, not even a single phone call from friend nor family. It was just me alone with my dog. A day just like any other.
It's my own fault, though, so don't feel sorry for me. I don't believe in feeling sorry for people who get what they say they wanted. Only be careful what you wish for, 'cause your wish might just come true.
